Funeral Director Jargon - Rachel

Funeral directors use jargon on a daily basis to describe what needs to be done, items, or conditions of bodies. Here are examples of the most common jargon used and understood by all funeral directors.

Posted: an autopsy.
"The body was posted this afternoon."

Prep: to embalm a body
"Go prep the body, please."

The Coach: the hearse.
"The Coach is expected around 3:00 pm, don't be late."

Call: a case.
"We got a call from Sandy this afternoon."

Decomp: decomposed body.
"We have a decomp down by the river, we need to get down there as soon as possible."

Floater: pretty self explanatory. Yuck. (When someone drowns, they sink. Then their body decomposes and fills with gas. Then the body floats to the surface of the water.)
"Floater in Lake Powell, get a car up there now."
