The following words are samples of jargon for the occupation of a nurse:
Ad Lib = No restrictions that apply to the patient
WBAT = Weight baring is tolerated
NPO = Nothing by mouth (The patient isn't allowed to eat anything)
AC/HS = Medication is administered before meals and at bedtime
Q - Hour = The Q means every & the hour can be changed to how often the patient needs something (ex. Q - Day)
MIC = Microbiology for cultures
PACU = Recovery room
Report = Used when the nurses are changing shifts or for patient information
NWB = Non weight baring
BID = Twice a day
QID = 4 times a day
NKDA = No known drug allergies
PICC = This is a line that is placed in the vein going towards the patient's heart (kind of like an IV but different)
I.S. = Incentive spriorometer (this helps the patient to breathe)
DNR = Do not resuscitate (No CPR)
DNI = Do not intubate (No life support)
TEDS = Compression Socks
